Fortior FU75xxQ1: Motor Control MCUs for Modern Automotive Applications

As vehicle electrification continues to accelerate, the number of electrically driven auxiliary systems is growing rapidly. Electric water and oil pumps, cooling fans, seat adjustment systems, window lifters and numerous cockpit actuators all require highly efficient, compact and reliable motor control solutions capable of operating under demanding automotive conditions.

With the FU7512Q1, FU7564Q1, FU7565Q1 and FU7574Q1, Fortior offers a family of microcontrollers specifically designed for automotive motor control applications. All devices are qualified to AEC-Q100 Grade 1 and support an operating temperature range from −40 °C to +125 °C. Together they provide scalable solutions ranging from single low-voltage motors to dual-motor systems and high-performance heat pump compressors.

Designed Specifically for Motor Control

Unlike general-purpose microcontrollers, the FU75xxQ1 family has been developed from the ground up for motor control.

Many functions that normally require additional software or external components are already implemented in dedicated hardware.

Depending on the device, the MCUs integrate features such as:

  • Gate drivers
  • Programmable operational amplifiers
  • Power management
  • Communication interfaces
  • Comprehensive hardware protection

This high level of integration reduces component count, simplifies hardware design and shortens development time while improving EMC performance.

The devices support both sensorless and sensored BLDC and PMSM motors, as well as induction and servo motors, allowing designers to use a common hardware platform across multiple automotive applications.

Advanced Motor Control Performance

At the heart of the FU75xxQ1 family is Fortior’s dedicated motor control architecture featuring hardware-assisted Field-Oriented Control (FOC).

The control platform incorporates advanced technologies including:

  • High-frequency injection (HFI) for sensorless startup
  • Multiple flux observer algorithms
  • Intelligent SVPWM switching
  • Low-speed observers
  • Dynamic dead-time compensation

These technologies enable:

  • Smooth sensorless startup
  • High torque at low speed
  • Stable operation over a wide speed range
  • Fast response to load changes
  • Reduced acoustic noise
  • Improved overall system efficiency

For electric auxiliary drives, this translates into quieter operation and lower energy consumption.

Comprehensive Hardware Protection

Reliability is a key requirement in automotive electronics.

The FU75xxQ1 family therefore incorporates extensive hardware protection functions, including:

  • Overcurrent protection
  • Under- and overvoltage protection
  • Overtemperature protection
  • Motor stall detection
  • Phase-loss detection
  • MOSFET VDS monitoring
  • Shoot-through prevention

Since these functions are implemented entirely in hardware, protection reactions occur within microseconds without software intervention. In the event of a fault, the power stage can be shut down immediately, significantly improving overall system safety.

Four Devices for Different Automotive Applications

Rather than offering numerous similar devices, Fortior has optimized the FU75xxQ1 family for four clearly defined application areas.

FU7512Q1 – High-End MCU for Demanding Motor Control

The FU7512Q1 targets high-performance applications using external gate drivers.

Dual independent PWM modules enable the control of two three-phase motors, while BiSS interfaces, extensive analog peripherals and hardware support for interleaved PFC make the device particularly suitable for:

  • Heat pump compressors
  • High-performance servo drives
  • Advanced thermal management systems

FU7564Q1 – Highly Integrated Solution for Single Low-Voltage Motors

The FU7564Q1 integrates gate drivers, power management and communication interfaces into a single device, significantly reducing external circuitry.

Typical applications include:

  • Electric water pumps
  • Oil pumps
  • Cooling fans
  • Windshield wipers
  • Power windows
  • Active grille shutters

FU7565Q1 – Optimized for Compact 48 V Applications

Designed specifically for modern 48 V vehicle architectures, the FU7565Q1 integrates a high-efficiency buck converter while providing excellent EMC robustness.

Typical applications include:

  • Water pumps
  • Cooling fans
  • Auxiliary electric drives
  • Mild-hybrid systems

FU7574Q1 – Dual-Motor Control on a Single Chip

The FU7574Q1 integrates two independent gate drivers, allowing two three-phase motors to be controlled simultaneously from a single MCU.

Independent monitoring of both channels ensures that a fault in one motor does not affect operation of the other.

Typical applications include:

  • Dual cooling fans
  • Dual water pumps
  • Dual seat adjustment systems
  • Multi-actuator cockpit modules
